How To Make Your Elearning Course Mobile-Accessible

LEARN on mobile screenIf you want to take your elearning course to the next level, you need to make sure that it is mobile-accessible. Most experts call it mobile learning. Thanks to the multitude of smart phones and sophisticated mobile devices that are being released and developed, it is now more convenient to get some learning done while you are literally on the go.

The thing about making elearning successful is to ensure that you know the latest trends and advancements in technology. You need to be able to ride them as they happen so you can utilize their benefits and take your students on to the next level of learning.

Although mobile learning is now possible, not all elearning courses can be easily converted. You do not have to build it from scratch but it does need a bit of tweaking to make your course mobile friendly.

Before you begin, you need to draft a mobile learning course outline first. Although you will not be making this mobile course from scratch, you do have to create it as a separate learning tool from your existing elearning course. So if there is anything that you have to build from scratch, it is this outline. This will not only put your course creation within a mobile perspective, it will also allow you to review the content in your existing course.

Once that is done, here are some tips that you can use to convert your existing courses into a mobile learning program.

  • Choose only the essential content. As you review the content of your existing elearning course, try to filter out the essential parts of the lesson. Mobile learning is at its best when it is short and simple – even more than an elearning course. Although there are devices that have bigger screens, they are still generally smaller than a computer screen. You may have to cut back on your visuals or at least you need to reformat them in order to make them mobile friendly. If the images are merely there for aesthetic appeal, you may have to remove them.
  • Consider delivering bite size content. Keep in mind that your learners will be choosing mobile learning primarily because they are always on the go. That being said, you want to ensure that they can digest your content easily and in a relatively short time.
  • Make interactive activities simple. While we want to be as sophisticated as possible, your learners will not have the same device. For instance, not everyone has a touch screen device. Make activities and other content easy to navigate and more importantly, short. It would be great if they can join in on the activities despite the fact that they are traveling or doing something similar.
  • Be cautious of your audio elements. Mobile learning can happen while your learners are literally on the road. While earphones and other accessories can help them hear the audio in your course, make sure the sound can be easily manipulated in terms of volume or stop/play/pause. Add subtitles too – or at least the ability to see them. This can be very helpful if your learners have no way of hearing the audio included in the course.

Follow these tips so you can successfully convert your elearning course into mobile learning. This should broaden the reach of your course so it can benefit learners who are always on the go.
